Some members may have been dismayed to hear that they will not receive the winter fuel payment this year, or may be struggling to pay bills this winter for any reason.
The Benevolent Fund of the League exists to support any League member or nurse who qualified at Barts before 1993. This winter, we have agreed to offer support to anyone in these groups who is having difficulties paying winter bills with a one-off payment of up to £200.
Please email benev.secretary@bartsleagueofnurses.org , or telephone the Benevolent Fund secretary on 07873 402814 for more information. There are a minimum of formalities, no intrusive questions will be asked, and a payment can be made to your bank account quickly. Please do not hesitate, thinking that there may be others worse off. Whilst it may be the case, fortunately, we have the resources to help a number of people, so you will not deprive anyone else.
If this is not applicable to you, please will you consider other Bart’s nurses you may know, who might benefit from this support ? We are trying to ensure none of our members are cold, or anxious about their bills this winter.
For further information about winter fuel payments please look for the latest information by accessing the government website https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment.
If you are eligible, you will get a letter in October or November directly from the Government confirming that you will receive a payment this year. About 30-40% of people who are eligible for pension credit (and who would therefore receive the winter fuel payment) have not applied for it. If you think you may be eligible then please consider doing so. The form is long, but help in completing it would be available from Independent Age, AgeCare UK, the Citizens Advice Bureau.
