Christmas at Barts has always been a time of warmth, tradition, and cherished memories, especially for our nurses who dedicated themselves to caring for others. This year, we’re excited to introduce the Barts League of Nurses’ 2024 Christmas card, “Sister’s Sitting Room”, designed by one of our own, Cate Bowley, whose beautiful memories of Christmas in the 1960s at Barts inspired this special design.
Cate’s journey as part of our Barts family began in 1964 when she moved from Canada to London and joined Barts as a student nurse. From the moment she stepped into the hospital, Cate was captivated by the deep history and traditions that defined Barts.
“For many of us, those long shifts and challenging days were made lighter by the sense of belonging and the small moments that brought us together—especially during the festive season. “Christmas at Barts in the 1960s was unforgettable. The wards were transformed into festive spaces, with decorations everywhere and stockings left for our patients by the night staff. Our nurses would come together for the traditional Christmas dinner, served in two sittings, and the Consultant would join to carve the turkey. Even after 12-hour shifts, we still found time for joy.”
Cate fondly recalls gathering in the Sister’s Sitting Room after work, sharing a glass of sherry by the gas fire before heading off duty. This year’s card, “Sister’s Sitting Room”, reflects these treasured memories. Cate’s design features a mini Memory Quilt, where each stocking represents the nurses’ belts that symbolised our training and dedication. The pink stocking is a special touch, made from fabric taken from the hem of a dress, adding an authentic and personal connection to our shared history. Cate’s mixed media appliqué technique brings the scene to life, evoking the warmth and closeness we experienced during those special Christmases.
For so many of us who have worked at Barts, these memories of working through the holidays, sharing small traditions, and bonding with our fellow nurses are a part of what makes Barts such a special place. Cate’s card is not just a beautiful design; it’s a tribute to those moments that unite us all—past and present nurses who gave their all, and still found joy in the festive season. As we celebrate 60 years since Cate’s nursing journey began at Barts, this card is a chance for us to reflect, reminisce, and remember the joy of those Christmases we shared.
